I took advantage of the feature in Wordpress that easily allows users to upload and post pictures. I created a page of shots from Okniawa and even though some of these pics aren’t so academic, they are great memories none the less.

click the pic and it will take you on a fantastic voyage to Okinawa with the Friends World students.

(3.70 mb - 4:02 min)

JanneM stated, Enka is the premier “my love is lost, we’re saying farewell for the last time, I’m so lonely” genre of music” And he is right, Enka is a way for Japanese to wallow in their tears. In this podcast I explore this aspect of Enka by looking at a song by Ishikawa Sayuri. The song is definately meloncholy and reflective, and has the lost love theme.

I really enjoy her delivery of the song, very poignant and heartfelt. And yes, this song is very sad.

If you wish to buy her CD’s check out Amazon.co.jp

Flickr as a Social tool

When I originally signed up for Flickr, I thought of it as just a place to publically show my photo’s. But in our web publishing class, Aaron demonstrated how it could be used as a social tool. In the past few days I have been getting more contacts and I was recently added as a contact by Stuart Iset who participated in the Ankor Photography Festval
Anyone interested in humanitarian work and photography should check it out. This is a good instance of the atvantages social networking, without flickr, I may have never heard of this kind of event.
(taken from the Ankor site)
The inaugural Angkor Photography Festival was held in October, 2005 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, and was the first of its kind organized in Southeast Asia. The goals of this international annual gathering are both artistic and humanitarian.

My first podcast

(1:37 1.49 mb)

According to the orthodox explanation, Enka began shaping itself by story-tellers on the street at the end of 19th century. They sang interesting stories with some melody. They “act” one-man theatre. The word “En” originally comes from “act”. Enka gained in popularity after WWII and is Mostly popular with older generations of Japanese.

Okinawa Pt. 1

I just spent the weekend in Okinawa studying the local culture and music, I did my best to document the trip in pictures, as best as I could and here are some of shots of the “class field trip.”

We were greeted at the airport by the Pokemon Jet, the sounds of the ocean and the buzzing of military aircraft.

We arrived in the late afternoon and had the evening to explore the downtown area. While local cusine seemed interesting, it was nice to get back to my Mexican roots and have some tacos, while they are not like my grandmother’s tacos, I was so happy to put some mexican looking food in my mouth.

Our hotel was on the main strip in downtown Naha and we were surrounded by souvenier shops and restaurants and plenty of Ice Cream shops.

I might have eaten at the taco shop twice on the first day in Okinawa, mmmmmmmmmmmm Tacos.

I found this article in Nippon Goro Goro regarding anti discrimination laws, because Americans are also minorities in Japan.
Anti-Discrimination Law Sought in Japan

By JOSEPH COLEMAN, Associated Press Writer Tue Mar 7, 6:35 AM ET

TOKYO - Japan needs a broad anti-discrimination law to help stop rampant violations of the human rights of minorities and foreigners, minority activists said Tuesday.

Yesterday the Joshinator and I visited the Kitano Tenmangu’s monthly market, where visitors can buy a wide array of second hand items, such as Kimono’s, Enka records, and firearms for kids. It is held every month on the 25th and is a great place to find a bargin. If you are looking for unique Japanese gifts, or something interesting and relatively inexpensive, I reccomend it.
